About the Pilates Method: Pilates is a gentle and effective training program that focuses on the deep abdominal muscles and back muscles in order to support better posture and improve overall strength and stability. The exercises are designed to lengthen and release shortened, tense muscles and strengthen weak and neglected ones to bring back our natural physical balance and flexibility. During all exercises, whether full-bodied or area specific, the core muscles (located deep in the stomach, lower back, and pelvis) are engaged and aligned to support movement in the extremities and stabilize the spine. Calm, deep breathing is coordinated with the exercises to provide regular oxygen flow to the muscles and prevent the build-up of tension. The exercises are done slowly and with precision, never sacrificing alignment or control for more extreme movements or greater repetitions. This focused and concentrated work will not only lengthen and tone the entire body but also raise physical awareness of the healthy way to move the body in order to prevent future injuries and painful postural habits. The five basic principles of Pilates: -The Core (deep muscles of the stomach, back, and pelvis) -Deep Breathing -Alignment -Coordination -Concentration All exercises are done primarily on a mat on the floor, lying on the back, stomach, side, or on hands and knees. Along with the Pilates exercises, focused stretching and self-massage techniques may be included. |
About Me: Laura Weiss is a professional dancer and certified Pilates teacher living and working in Berlin. She studied dance and performance studies in the Unites States and graduated with a B.A. from the University of Chicago. Last year she completed a nine-month teacher training course at pilateslab-berlin where she studied Pilates theory and practice, as well as anatomy, posture analysis, and related physiotherapies. Her teaching style focuses primarily on the basic principles of Pilates: deep breathing, concentration, alignment, the center, and coordination. Her class is designed not only to provide exercises that strengthen the deep abdominal muscles, back, and pelvic floor, but also to provide a balance between muscular activation and relaxation, to increase flexibility, and to improve and raise awareness of posture. She is also trained in rehabilitation after an injury and can support all levels of physical fitness and health. Her extensive dance training can be integrated into her class to challenge even the most advanced Pilates practitioner.
